Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ...infiltrating lesion affecting only a portion of the circumference of the canal is not very favorably influenced, and although something may be done to protect the unaffected portions of the wall from the radium rays, by gauze packing and lead rubber screening, some degree of proctitis generally occurs. If extensive ulceration be present, even though the danger of obstruction may seem remote, the patient should be advised to submit to the performance of colostomy before radium treatment is undertaken, as the passage of faeces over an ulcerated surface, the tenderness of which has been intensified by a radium reaction, is productive of very severe pain. The routine treatment of cases of rectal carcinoma consists in the introduction into the lumen of the growth--if such exist--or the placing in accurate apposition with the affected area, of a tube of 100 to 200 mgrs., screened with 2 mm. of lead, and giving an exposure of from fifteen to thirty hours' duration according to the strength of the tube. The dosage should not exceed 3,000 mgrs. hours, and the exposure should not be repeated at an interval of less than two months. Special care should be taken to protect the healthy mucous membrane as far as possible from the radium rays. During the past twelve months several cases of rectal carcinoma have received injections of cuprase between their successive exposures, 5 c.c. of the solution being injected intramuscularly every fourth day, until a total of 60 c.c. has been administered.
